Does vitamin D deficiency relate to anxiety and panic?

If you suffer from anxiety or panic attacks, you should read the following and then assure that your blood-vitamin D levels are optimal. Your 25(OH)D, or calcidiol, level should be between 50-60 ng/ml.

Anxiety is pandemic in the USA, and according to a 2007 research study, vitamin D deficiency correlates very closely to anxiety in people who suffer from fibromyalgia.[1] Also, two studies of mice with abnormal vitamin D receptors in the brain found an increase in anxiety, aggression, poor grooming, maternal pup neglect and cannibalism.[2] [3]

Though more research is needed before drawing definitive conclusions, it is likely that vitamin D plays a part in this disorder. I discussed in an earlier blog the evidence for vitamin D deficiency as a cause of brain and nervous-system disorders, and anxiety fits that category. The mice studies just cited also make one wonder if the horrible increase in both paternal and maternal child abuse is not due in part to the fact that the American Academy of Dermatology and others of the “sunscare” industry have done such a good job in frightening people out of the sunlight, thereby creating our critical, widespread vitamin D deficiency—food for thought.

Hi, Im a 28 yr old physically active Male. A day or so before New Years I was experiencing anxiety that I could not attribute to a cause. Work was going well, no issues with marriage, family, at least that was on my mind. I have never experienced anxiety out of the blue like this before. Of course I've felt nervousness/anxiety after a breakup with a girlfriend or before a football game etc but not just.....boom for no reason that was on my head.

i had my bloodwork done and everything was normal except my Vitamin D. It was at 27ng's which they said was really low for a person that drinks lots of milk, takes vitamins, works out etc. They have put me on a 50,000 IU pill that I will take once a week for 4 weeks. I took the first pill yesterday. I was also prescribed Xanax last Monday. I took one .25 pill 3 times a day until Saturday. Did I feel better on it in a day or so, yes, but by saturday night I was just really tired and felt somewhat anxious again. Plus I had my tension headaches back. Been off the xanax since Saturday and feel better than I did the week before when I didnt have the xanax. Mornings are the worst, gets better throughout the day and then I get tired early at like 8pm-9pm. Hope this Vitamin D helps me. Went tanning for the first time as well today.

Hi, I recently changed my diet to restrict sugar, fatty food and a host of others to maximize on weight training. Then I started to get anxiety and panic attacks.

At first they were rare but later became more frequent and severe. I went to the an endocrinologist for blood work. My doctor only discovered a vitamin d deficiency. She didn't say that was the cause but she referred me to a psychiatrist for further analysis and she prescribed vitamin d 50,000 iu 1 tab for 6 months.

However, I do believe that the vitamin d contributed in some way to the absence of my anxiety and panic attacks. I hope this helps you in your search for some relief.

Now, I realize how important it is to have an optimum of vitamin d, to avoid a lot of illnesses and even provide solution to some of these ailments that we suffer. It is as simple as getting some sunlight onto our skin. :-)

I was having panic attacks and would wake up with them. From a routine physical, I found my vitamin D level was a 6 from my doctor, should be about 31. She didn't say there was a correlation of low vitamin D and panic attacks but she had me take high doses to get me up to the correct level. After taking the pills for a few weeks my panic attacks disappeared. I truly believe that some people manifest panic attacks from low vitamin D. I don't believe low vitamin D affects all people with panic attacks though. I can now say with the correct amount of vitamin D I am doing great. Hope people check there vitamin D levels if they start having panic attacks because that is easy to resolve.

I have been suffering from panic attacks, simply the most terrible thing. I was getting the panic attacks when talking to people, walking into a store etc... It's been going on for a few years now and I have also been dealing with sciatica nerve pain. I have had cortisone shots as well as epidural shots. I recently had my blood work checked and found I was deficient in vitamin D. I had a 21 and should be between 31-100. I started taking 2000 IU a day and started feeling better, I also started taking calm which is a magnesium supplement tea because my muscles always felt tense and tight and I was dealing with pain/muscle cramps / muscle spasms/ eye twitching which are all symptoms along with panic attacks that you can also get from being magnesium deficient. My blood work didn't show me deficient in magnesium but I heard that it usually won't and you can still be deficient. It's been about 2 months now and I feel amazing! All my previous symptoms are gone. I highly suggest taking vitamins D and magnesium. I started taking the calm with a half teaspoon in the morning and night and worked my way up to 1 teaspoon morning and night. Hope this helps you like it did me. Cheers!
